Fermentation Workshop and Social

You know that New Year resolution you gave yourself? The one where you adopt a more plant-based diet for your and the planet’s health? The resolution to eat more probiotic, gut-friendly foods? To get active in the move to prevent food waste? To learn the lost arts of food preservation that your ancestors practiced as a matter of necessity? To get out and meet people more often!?

Well get started on all of the above by resolving to join Steve Corso and The Food Shed for a fermentation workshop and social January 19 at 3 PM in Cleveland Heights BottleHouse brewery.

The Food Shed will provide everything you need - from quart mason jars, salt, and rescued vegetables from local vendors to the information and tools you’ll need to make delicious ferments to take home. Participants are encouraged to bring in additional items to use and/or share (those neglected vegetables in the fridge drawer you’ve been meaning to do something with; your favorite herbs and spices) but otherwise, just come ready to peel, cut, salt, and pack with your future friends.

Ticket price guarantees 2 quart jars and a (more-or-less) equal share of ingredients and can be split among two adult participants. Kids are welcome to participate. Additional mason jars and crocks will be available for purchase. Tickets available at Eventbrite.

Steve Corso is the founder of The Food Shed, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to building northeast Ohio's future food system. In 2010 he left a high school biology classroom in California to grow vegetables, fruits, nuts and mushrooms on 7 acres in Geauga County. He has written numerous articles for edible Cleveland.

FermentFest

Lacto-fermentation is an easy, safe and ancient practice that turns ho-hum vegetables into probiotic flavor-bombs that keep for months (dare I say years) when chilled.

Have some broccoli stems you hate to toss out? Got an overflow of CSA kohlrabi, radishes, and turnips? Remember that cabbage with the splotchy leaves you've been meaning to do something with in the produce drawer? How about those green tomatoes in the garden that have no hope of ripening? Any and all of your neglected vegetables can be fermented into something worth eating.

Grab your veggies and join The Food Shed at Bottlehouse Brewery in Lakewood for a lesson in fermentation. Then swap your fermentables with other attendees and get to work chopping, salting, and packing them into crocks and jars to take home. Your creations will come alive and be ready to eat for Thanksgiving!

The Food Shed will provide participants with salt, some flavoring ingredients (some combination of mustard seeds, chili peppers, garlic, horseradish, etc) and one jar to keep. We'll have plenty of knives, peelers, cutting boards, bowls, etc to borrow. And sure, The Food Shed will provide snacks.

In addition to vegetables, bring any favorite ingredients and flavors (herbs and spices) and, jars or crocks that you'd like to use (hint: the ceramic crock from the slow cooker you haven't used in years works great, as do cleaned jars from store-bought products). Come meet someone new, maybe grab a fermented beverage at Bottlehouse, and take home some winter provisions.

Tickets available on Eventbrite

Pickle Party!

PICKLE PARTY!

Bring in your garden remains, your CSA overflow (kohlrabi!), and even those rubbery carrots neglected in the produce drawer (nothing moldy) and join The Food Shed for a veggie swap and fermentation social!

We’ll be cutting up that produce and packing them into jars and crocks, adding salt and flavor ingredients* and taking them home.

Bring in your own lidded fermentation vessels, peelers and paring knives but The Food Shed will have quart canning jars to sell, spare knives and peelers to borrow and plenty of salt.

Birdsong Farm and A&O Farm will be on hand with organic produce to purchase.

Cleveland Kraut will offer tips as well as samples and sales of their own delicious products

Our scraps will be taken away by Rust Belt Riders.

Come have fun participating in your local food system and go home with fermenting veggies - a winter staple and treat!

Sunday October 6, 3Pm-5PM

Graciously hosted by Bottlehouse Brewery

2050 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights.
